Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle Background

The Albert Bartlett, or Spa, Novices Hurdle is a relatively new race as it was added in 2005 when the Festival added a fourth day of racing. As the name would suggest it is for novice hurdlers aged four and over, and involves 12 hurdles over a distance of 3 miles.

The race was originally a Grade 2 but has since been upgraded to Grade 1 status in 2008 and some leading names have claimed the race in the past. Tony McCoy and Robert Thornton lead the way in the jockey's field as they have two wins apiece, while Jonjo O'Neill stands alone with two wins as a trainer after his successes with Black Jack Ketchum (2006) and Wichita Lineman (2007).
