Arkle Challenge Trophy Background

Known as the Champion Chase for novices, the Arkle Trophy is the second race on the opening day of the Cheltenham Festival. The 2 mile race is open to horses aged 5 years old and over and boasts a prize fund of £130,000.

The race is named after the great Gold Cup winner Arkle and the race itself is often an indicator for success in future Cheltenham Festivals. Notable past winners include the Queen Mother Champion Chase winners Voy Por Ustedes, Moscow Flyer and Azertyioup. Tony Dreaper leads the way in the race for trainers with a five winners, while champion jockey Tony McCoy is one of several jockeys with three wins to his name up to 2011.
