Byrne Group Plate Background

The Byrne Group Plate is a handicap race for horses aged five and over and it involves a race distance of 2 miles and 5 furlongs, with seventeen fences to be jumped.

It has been part of the festival since 1950 and remarkably only one favourite in the past 28 years has gone on to win the race. Of the current trainers, Nicky Henderson has most wins with four and he shares that honour with past trainers Bobby Renton and Martin Pipe. Fred Winter meanwhile is leading jockey with three wins during the 1950s, and The Tsarevich and Elfast are the most successful horses with two wins apiece.
