Formerly the Jewson's Novices Handicap Chase, the race was also called the Centenary Novices Chase in 2011 and rounds up the opening days racing. The new name came into effect in 2012 and race was moved to the opening day card in 2011 after the introduction of the new Jewson Novices Chase to the Thursday racecard.
The race distance of 2 miles and 5 furlongs includes 17 fences to be jumped, and is open to horses aged five and over. It is a handicap chase and is open to horses with a rating of 0-140 as they compete for a prize fund of £55,000.
The original race, before the name change, was first established in 2005 when the Festival was extended to involve four days of racing. There has yet to be single horse, trainer or jockey to win the race more than once, although it can lay claim to some notable Cheltenham winners, not least champion trainers Paul Nicholls and Philip Hobbs, and jockeys Tony McCoy, Barry Geraghty and Richard Johnson.
