Cross Country Chase Background

The Cross Country Handicap Chase involves a distance of 3 miles and 7 furlongs and takes place on the opening day of the Festival. It was one of the first races to be added to the Festival to make it a four day event and it now has a prize purse of £45,000.

It was first run in 2005 and trainer Enda Bolger claimed four of the first five winners to become the most successful trainer in the race's short history. A standout winner of the Cross Country Chase was Garde Champetre, who won the 2008 and 2009 renewals. The veteran horse is back for another crack in 2011 after a disappointing performance in 2010. Nine Carberry is the leading jockey with three wins, including two aboard Garde Champetre that made it three consecutive successes between 2007 and 2009.
