Fred Winter Handicap Hurdle Background

The Fred Winter Handicap Hurdle is named after the late, great jockey and trainer Fred Winter. It is a handicap race for novice hurdlers that generally attracts a large and strong field, and they compete over a distance of 2 miles and half a furlong and take on eight hurdles along the way.

The race is still very much in its infancy as it was added to the festival in 2005 as part of the festival's expansion to four days. No jockey or trainer has won the race more than once so far, although the Paul Nicholls-Ruby Walsh combination enjoyed more Cheltenham success in 2010 when Sanctuaire claimed victory off a weight of 11st 2lb.
