Grand Annual Chase Background

The Grand Annual Chase is a handicap race that closes the Festival on the Friday and remarkably was first run in 1834. It is a handicap race for horses aged five and over, and the race involves a distance of 2 miles and half a furlong and includes 14 fences.

Nigel Twiston-Davies and Paul Nicholls have enjoyed recent success in the £80,00 prize purse race although they trail Fulke Walwyn in terms of the number of wins. Walwyn enjoyed great success in the Festival through the 1940s to the 70s and indeed claimed three Grand Annual winners in 1946, 1953 and 1964. Graham Bradley is the leading jockey meanwhile with three wins after he won in 1986, 1992, 1995 and 1997.
