Kauto Star v Denman Betting

Two horses, two owners and one trainer, this is the story of Kauto Star and Denman, two of the generation's National Hunt racing superstars, who face each other in the totesport Gold Cup at the 2010 Cheltenham Festival for the third time.

Paul Nicholls is the forunate trainer who saddles both of these horses on the 19th March, safe in the knowledge that something would have to go seriously amiss if neither was to win the Gold Cup. The rivalry goes back the last two years in this race, with Denman winning the 2007 Gold Cup and beating Kauto Star, who was the reigning champion staying chaser at the time by seven lengths. Twelve months later to last years race, Kauto Star got his revenge beating Denman into second this time and doing so becoming the first horse to regain the Gold Cup.

2010 Season Form

Paul Nicholls has lightly campaigned the ten-year-old this season with just the two races in the lead up to the 2009 Gold Cup in March. Despite suffering a scare in the Betfair Chase in November where he beat Imperial Commander by a nose when going off a 4/6F he proved the doubters wrong a month later winning his fourth successive King George by a massive 36 lengths. The trainer is bullish about his hopes for the Gold Cup and is an odds on favourite to retain his title and make it three Gold Cups to add to his already glowing resume.

2010 Season Form

After an out of sorts campaign due to injury and poor jumping in 2009, Denman bounced back to what appeared to be his very best when lugging round top weight for the second time in the Hennessy Gold Cup in November at Newbury. That win draw many comparisons with the win in 2007, when he followed it up with his victory in the 2008 Gold Cup. However, due to the inclement weather condition this year, trainer Paul Nicholls had to wait until the AON Chase to give his stable star his last prep race with disatrous concequences. The Gold Cup second favourite was travelling well until hitting the fourth out very harsh and AP McCoy was eventually unseated at the last fence when already beaten. Nicholls has since claimed his horse would have won if it weren't for the jumping error four out and continues to be bullish about the ten-year-old's work at home.

Kauto Star v Denman Odds

The Newbury result meant that Denman was pushed out around the 7/2 mark from 2/1 before that race, with Kauto Star now as short as 4/6 favourite with some bookmakers to win his third Gold Cup. In a match bet between the two, you can get 8/15 on Kauto Star and 11/8 on Denman if you shop around the bookmakers. We'll have an odds comparison right here during Cheltenham Festival week. The Gold Cup shouldn't really be a two horse race but the betting dictates that it's best price 14/1 bar the rest of the field with last years Ryanair Chase winner Imperial Commander seen as the main threat. Trainer Paul Nicholls saddles five in the race and will undoubtedly be keen to sweep up all three places. It's one apiece in the head to head with these two horses and in the lead up to the festival it is certainly Kauto Star who is receiving the most market support.
