Kim Muir Challenge Cup Background

The Kim Muir Challenge Cup finishes off the third day of racing at Cheltenham Festival and is a race for amateur riders. It involves 19 fences over a distance of 3 miles and a furlong and a half, and is a handicap race for horses aged five and over.

The race was first established in 1946 and gets its name 'Kim Muir' from the name of a cavalry officer who was killed during World War II. Fred Rimmell leads the way for trainers after he claimed four winners in 1951, 1955, 1961 and 1977. While no horse or jockey has won more than twice, with current jockeys Richard Harding and Richard Burton level on two. Harding claimed glory aboard the highly rated Ballabriggs in 2010, who was running off top weight of 11st 12lb.
