Mares Only Hurdle Background

The David Nicholson Mares Only Hurdle, as its name would suggest, is a hurdle for mares aged four and over. The race involves a distance of 2 miles and 4 furlongs, with nine hurdles to be negotiated, and has a prize fund of £75,000.

It was established in 2008 and originally held on the final day of the Festival on the new course but has since been moved to he opening day and to the old course. The race has little in the way of history but Quevega claimed two consecutive wins in 2009 and 2010 to provide jockey Ruby Walsh and Willie Mullins with valuable Cheltenham wins.
