RSA Chase Background

Formerly known as the Broadway Novices' Chase, the RSA Chase is a race for novices aged five and over and involves a distance of 3 miles and half a furlong, with 19 fences to be negotiated along the way.

It is an ideal race for looking at potential future Cheltenham Festival champions, particularly as several winners of the RSA Chase have gone on to win the Festival's highlight - the Gold Cup. Denman achieved the feat most recently when winning the RSA in 2007 and then the Gold Cup in 2008.

Paul Nicholls has enjoyed great success in the RSA, as he has done in the Gold Cup as well, but is behind Fulke Walwyn for overall wins. Walwyn enjoyed 4 wins during the 1940s and 50s, and Nicholls still needs a few more wins to match that feat.
