Supreme Novices Background

The Supreme Novices is the curtain raiser to the Cheltenham Festival and is often greeted by the renowned 'Cheltenham Roar'. With a prize fund of £100,000, it is open to novices aged four years and over and involves a distance of 2miles and half a furlong, with 8 hurdles to be negotiated along the way.

Previous winners include the likes of Brave Inca, who later went on to achieve Champion Hurdle success, as well as Arcalis, Go Native and Menorah more recently. Many of the past winners have gone on to achieve future success at Cheltenham, while 2010 Champion Hurdle winner Binocular came runner up in the Supreme in 2008. No jockey or trainer has won more than two Supreme Novices up to 2011, with Paul Carberry the only modern day jockey with two wins to his name and there are several trainers with dual winners, including Willie Mullins, Nicky Henderson and Martin Pipe.
