Triumph Hurdle Background

The Triumph Hurdle is the opening race of the final day of the final festival and it is exclusively raced by juveniles. It is open to novice hurdlers aged four and over and during the 2 mile and 1 furlong trip there are eight hurdles to be jumped.

The race was first run in 1939 at Surrey but was transferred to Cheltenham in 1965 and has been a popular race ever since as several winners have gone on to enjoy Champion Hurdle success. Winners of both races include Persian War, Kribensis, Katchit and Clair Coleil.

Current trainer Henderson is the leading trainer in the race's history with five victories after he enjoyed consecutive wins in 2009 and 2010 with Zaynar and Soldatino respectively. Barry Geraghty was aboard both of this winners to take his Triumph win tally to three and become the joint leading jockey with Jimmy Uttley.
