JLT Speciality Handicap Chase Background

The Grade 3 JLT Speciality Handicap Chase, formerly known as the William Hill Trophy, is run over 3 miles and a half a furlong. The race is open to 5 year olds and over, and involves 19 fences and a prize fund of £75,000.

Runners often go on to compete in the Grand National at Aintree in April. Wichita Lineman was a notable winner in 2008 as he produced a stunning comeback to claim glory after being nearly 20 lengths off the pace at one point. He was ridden by the great Tony McCoy, who only has one winner in this handicap chase up to 2011, while there are several leading jockeys with two wins to their name including Robert Thornton and Paul Carberry. Trainer Fred Rimell claimed four winners in the 1950s and only Fulke Walwyn has matched that feat with four victories from 1961 to 1977.
