World Hurdle Background

The leading long distance hurdle event in the national calendar is the highlight of the third day of racing at the Festival and is one of the highlights of the whole Festival. It was first establishedi n 1972 as the Spa Hurdle but took on its current title in 2005 and is now a firm fixture of the Thursday racecard after originally being run on the Tuesday or Wednesday.

The race itself is run over 3 miles and involves twelve hurdles, and is open to horses aged four and over. The £260,000 prize purse on offer has been dominated by some impressive horses in the past, not least recent winners Inglis Drever and Big Buck's. Howard Johnson's Inglis Driver leads the way for most World Hurdle wins with three after claiming glory in 2005 and then returning to win in 2007 and 2008. Big Buck's meanwhile has two from 2009 and 2010 and will be looking for a third in 2011.

Inglis Driver's victories also mean Howard Johnson is leading trainer alongside Fulke Walwyn (1982, 1985, 1986), while Big Buck's jockey Ruby Walsh is joint leading jockey with those two wins.
